My Creation Story: Where Does Your Story Begin?

My Creation Story: Where Does Your Story Begin?

Forgetting

Where does your story begin?

Looking back, there were so many pages I could have started my story on.

Grief.

Joy.

Loss.

Achievement.

Confusion.

Love.

All of them were real.

All of them shaped me.

Without realizing it, one of those pages quietly became the lens through which I read the rest of the story…

Grief.

Some of it was obvious.

The death of my father.

Relationships that ended.

Years of trying to conceive.

Some of it was almost invisible.

Life unfolding differently than I'd imagined.

The ordinary moments time quietly stole.

Pieces of myself disappearing into motherhood.

I don't think grief was ever the problem.

Forgetting where the story began was.

Remembering

Through a series of spiritual invitations, I eventually found BEMA, a podcast that explores Scripture through an ancient Hebrew lens.

It began in Genesis.

I'd heard the creation story countless times.

I'd read it to my girls.

I could recite parts of it by heart.

But this time...

I wasn't just hearing the story.

I was listening.

Before there was shame.

Before there was fear.

Before there was separation.

Before there were kingdoms…

God created and saw that it was good.

Before production.

Before performance.

Before achievement.

Before humanity had done anything at all.

God looked over all he had made,

and He saw that it was very good.

This time I had heard those words differently.

They resonated as Truth.

The kind of Truth you don't learn.

You remember.

Somehow…

those words became alive to me.

I'd spent years searching.

Not for a different God.

Not for different beliefs.

But for the wholeness that had always been true.

I've always been deeply spiritual.

Rooted in Christ.

The Trinity has always been home.

But I've also always encountered God in the space between.

In nature.

In Spirit.

In creativity.

In body.

In meaningful conversations.

Everywhere I found love, beauty, connection, and truth.

My wrestling was never with God.

It was with certainty.

With the voices that insisted faith should look one way...

that there was a right way to seek…

and a wrong way to wonder.

Genesis didn't answer those questions.

It invited me more deeply into them.

Back to something ancient.

Before denominations.

Before arguments.

Before "ours" and "theirs."

Before we divided what had always belonged together.

That's when I realized.

Somewhere along the way,

I'd forgotten our story begins with goodness.

Not all at once.

I had simply started reading my life from a different page.

Whatever page it was...

I had forgotten it wasn't the beginning.

Trusting

Returning to the beginning didn't change my circumstances.

It changed the lens through which I read everything else.

The way I met grief.

The way I held productivity.

The way I moved through uncertainty.

The way I saw myself.

The way I saw you.

I still don't have the story figured out.

I don't always love the page I'm on.

I don't always understand where the Author is going.

And somehow…

I don't need to.

In many ways, I hope I never do.

I've actually come to enjoy the dance of not knowing.

My understanding continues to grow.

Not because Truth changes.

But because I do.

Grief was one page.

One chapter.

But not the beginning.

Not the whole story.

Whatever page you're on today…

there is an earlier page.

Before you'd done anything at all.

There was simply…

God.

Creation.

And goodness.

Maybe trust begins there.

Remembering where the story begins.

Trust the Story.

P.S.

If your language for the Sacred are different than mine, I believe the invitation is the same. My hope isn't that we all use the same words. It's that we keep seeking Truth together and remember where the story begins.
